Bulk RNA-Seq Analysis Workshop

WHEN: Held over 3 Tuesday/Thursdays, & an optional 3 Tuesday/Thursdays from Feb. 17 – Mar 5. (See table below). We’ll meet 9:30am – 3:30pm w/ an hour break for lunch at noon. The main workshop will be held online, and advanced workshop sessions are to be determined.

Note: We will record the main workshop sessions if you must miss part of a day and make it up later.

WHAT:  In addition to our main Bulk RNA-Seq Analysis workshop we are tentatively offering advanced sessions after the main workshop. The online main workshop will include an introduction to bulk RNA-Seq technology and experimental design, and detailed steps on how to perform bioinformatics and statistical analyses on an example Illumina-sequenced gene expression dataset in Linux and R platforms. This includes software like Salmon and MultiQC, as well as R packages like limma and edgeR. Please note that bulk RNA-Seq analysis is very different from single cell analysis and so skills learned here will only be generally applicable to the later.

The following advanced sessions are semi-structured times to synthesize what you’ve learned in the workshop to your own dataset (or a published dataset) under the guidance of HPCBio staff. Every dataset is different there are often several small or large differences between your data and the example dataset provided in the main workshop that could be tricky to navigate. Due to this, attendees are more likely to achieve their personal research goals and solidify their understanding of RNA-Seq by attending these advanced sessions. At registration you’ll apply for these, but will not pay for them until we confirm the location and approve your application.

WHO:  Intended for graduate students, post-docs, research staff, and faculty from any University/organization (different rates apply; see COST section).

PREREQUISITES:  A beginner knowledge of bash (a.k.a command line linux), high-performance computing (HPC), and R programming is required to take this workshop. After your registration, we will provide details and materials on how to fulfill these requirements on your own time. This is a fast-paced workshop; while it will reasonable to ask questions about bash, HPC, and R if you forget something, it is not possible for us to catch you up if you haven’t reviewed any prerequisite material.

WHERE:  The main workshop will be held online via Zoom. The Advanced sessions are to be determined.

COST:  See table below.
