Carpentries-Style Linux and Git Workshop
WHEN: June 16th from 9am – 5pm. There will be a lunch break from 12pm-1pm (lunch will not be provided, but Array Cafe and Bevier Cafe will be in the same building).
WHAT: We are excited to announce a Carpentries-style Linux and Git Workshop, designed for beginners with no prior experience required! This full-day, hands-on workshop will introduce participants to two essential tools used in academic research. Bash is a language that allows one to run computational software and other common tasks on computers with Linux command line based operating systems, such as UIUC’s research computing clusters (e.g. Biocluster, Campus cluster, NCSA clusters). We’ll teach you how to navigate directories, manage files, and automate tasks in this language. Git is a version control system that allows one to track and manage changes to their code- or text-based work over time while collaborating with others. We’ll teach you the necessary commands to track changes to your files as well as how to navigate online GitHub repositories.
Note: Our workshop will follow the Carpentries teaching style and lessons, and our instructors are Carpentry-certified trainers. However we cannot technically call this a Carpentries workshop since we’re not including a second language such as R or Python.
WHO: Intended for graduate students, post-docs, research staff, and faculty.
PREREQUISITES: None
WHERE: IGB (Institute of Genomic Biology)
COST: Registration for U of I System attendees (UIUC, UIC, & UIS) is $210. Attendees from other universities or companies are welcome — please reach out at hpcbio-training @biotech.illinois.edu for a separate registration link and pricing, which is higher to account for institutional overhead.
We recognize that $210 is more than the free or ~$50 Carpentries workshops you may have seen elsewhere, and we think that deserves a candid explanation. Many of those workshops are backed by grant funding, vendor sponsorships, or large institutional training budgets. Ours isn’t — the cost directly reflects the time of the staff who design, prepare, and teach the material, which is becoming more commonplace. We’ve done everything we can to keep the price accessible while making sure that HPCBio staff are fairly compensated. We appreciate your understanding and support — it’s what makes these workshops possible.
